Creating an Equitable Housing Market: Universal Design in the Private Sector

Access & Residential Design Committees: Creating an Equitable Housing Market: Universal Design in the Private Sector (Virtual)
Presented by the Boston Society for Architecture
August 12, 2024 | 12:00-1:30pm

Sponsored in part by Envisioning Access

The Access and Residential Design Committees are teaming up to explore how architects and designers can revolutionize residential design by integrating Universal Design principles into the housing stock. Since the founding of the FHA in 1968 and ADA in 1990, the public sector has included baseline accessibility in its multifamily housing stock for decades. However, there is still no guarantee for aspiring homeowners to find accessible or adaptable private single-family homes.

Guest speaker Jonathan White joins us from the University at Buffalo’s IDEA Center to explore the eight principles of Universal Design and how thoughtful home modifications can significantly improve the fit between individuals and their living environments. We will discuss the beneficiaries of Universal Design beyond those with disabilities, understand the primary goals of home modifications, and explore policies and methods of home assessment. We will also review several common home modifications and case studies to exemplify best practices for residential entries, toilet and bathing rooms, and kitchens that are more usable to people with disabilities and people who are aging-in-place.
